An electrical connector for motor vehicles has at least two connector parts (15,17) each with contacts (11,13), and actuating device (19) having an adjustment movement bidirectional relative to the connector parts (15,17) so as to make or release the electrical connections between the contacts (11,13). An electromechanical test device (not shown) makes it detectable whether or not the connector parts take up correct relative positions in the end position of the actuating device. The test device has at least one test element (23) in which one connector part (15) is movable so that it provides a signal path during correct relative positioning of the connector parts (15,17), by forming an electrical connection between two test contacts in the connector parts, the signal path being interrupted during incorrect relative positioning of the connector parts.
