Compounds of the general formula (I) or their salts or prodrugs have excellent insulin secretion promoting and blood sugar decreasing effects and are lowly toxic, thus being useful as drugs, particularly preventive and therapeutic agents for diabetes and diabetic complication, wherein one of R<1> and R<2> is hydrogen or a substituent and the other is an optionally substituted cyclic group; W is a free valency or a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group; and Y is a group represented by the general formula: -OR<3> (wherein R<3> is hydrogen, optionally substituted hydrocarbyl, an optionally substituted heterocyclic group, or optionally substituted acyl) or carboxyl which may be converted into an ester or an amide.
