PURPOSE: A governor for an elevator is provided to improve safety by stopping an elevator while overspeeding the elevator upward or downward. CONSTITUTION: A governor of an elevator comprises plural pendulums(130) moved outside by centrifugal force; a first trip lever(140) operated by contacting to the pendulum; a first stopping member(150) rotationally combined to a main wheel(120) by being interlocked with the first trip lever; a first ratchet(160) controlled by the main wheel by being geared with the first stopping member; a first rope fixer(170) having a first link(172); a rope catcher(178) rotationally combined to the first link; and an outer force applying member(176) applying outer force into the rope catcher. Thereby, the governor of the elevator improves safety by stopping an elevator while overspeeding the elevator upward or downward.
