PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the difficulty in exactly aligning the center of the exit pupil of an image observation optical system and the position of the observer's eye. SOLUTION: A diaphragm member 6 of a diaphragm aperture area smaller than the surface area of an image display element 1 for displaying images of the image observation optical system having the image display element, a light source 3 for illumination the image display element and a projection optical system 20 for projecting the image light emitted from the illuminated image display element to the observer's eye 20 is made insertable and removable into and from an illumination optical path between the light source and the image display element.
