PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure tensile strength and elongation without breaking a metallic tube by using a ball test for determining whether the metallic tube fulfils its specifications or not on the basis of a recess formed by pressing a spherical body to the metallic tube surface. SOLUTION: When the spherical body is pressed to the metallic tube surface for forming a recess, a chart of a relational line between a load and a recess depth at this time is obtained, and an inclination of the relational line found from this chart is compared with inclinations in previously obtained charts of the load and recess depth relational line for various materials. From the load-recess depth relational line chart of various kinds of materials having the same or approximately same inclination, material quality such as tensile strength and extension of the metallic tube to be measured are predicted.
