PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer material capable of giving a polymer electrolyte which exhibits not only excellent processability, durable stability, heat resistance, solvent resistance and mechanical characteristics but also excellent ionic conductivity by introducing sulfonic acid groups or phosphonic acid groups exchibiting specific ionic conductivity into a polyimidazole-based polymer having excellent heat resistance, mechanical characteristics or the like to induce solubility in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. SOLUTION: This polyimidazole compound containing sulfonic acid group or phosphonic acid group is characterized by having a conductivity of >=0.001 [S/cm] determined by measuring an alternating current impedance of 10,000 Hz at 80 deg.C and 95%RH, having a solubility of >=5 wt.% in N-methyl-2- pyrrolidone, having an average mol.wt. of 1,000 to 1,000,000, and when plural repeating units are contained, they are mainly randomly and/or alternately binding to each other.
