PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer material capable of giving a polymer electrolyte which exhibits excellent durability, heat resistance, solvent resistance and mechanical characteristic by introducing sulfonic acid groups into an aromatic polymer having excellent heat resistance, mechanical characteristics or the like resulting in a polymer with a specified structure having heat stability and ionic conductivity. SOLUTION: This aromatic polymer containing sulfonic acid groups is characterized by having a conductivity of >=0.001 [S/cm] determined by measuring an alternating current impedance of 10,000 Hz at 80 deg.C and 95%RH, having a3 wt.% loss temperature of >=370 deg.C, having an average mol.wt. of 1,000 to 1,000,000, and when plural repeating units are contained, they are mainly randomly and/or alternately binding to each other.
