PURPOSE: To provide a printer capable of stabilizing operation without lowering printing processing capacity even when a printing head unit is continuously reversed retracted, stopped and started. CONSTITUTION: The printer has a linear motor for reciprocatingly moving the printing head unit along a constant direction, and an elastic spring exerting reversal energizing force on the printing head unit in the vicinity of both ends of a reciprocally moving section when the printing head unit is reciprocally moved by the driving force of the linear motor. The microcomputer built in the printer commands the linear motor to generate the driving force opposed to the reversal energizing force to once retract the printing head unit to a position receiving no reversal energizing force (E, F), and variably controls timing for returning the printing head unit to a section (reversal section) to which the reversal energizing force of the elastic spring is applied from the retracted stop position (one-dot broken line) when the printing head unit is resumed immediately after retraction.
