PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element permitting half-tone display and multi-gradation display. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element comprises a liquid crystal layer 30, a pair of substrates 10 and 20 arranged to hold the liquid crystal layer 30, and a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix form. The liquid crystal layer 30 has a spiral structure, and according to applied voltage, it presents at least two stable states of a planar state and a focal conic state and at each of the pixels, the liquid crystal layer 30 has at least two thickness values (d) different from each other, and also the liquid crystal layer 30 has at least two areas in which the 1st threshold voltage values for transferring the planar state to the focal conic state are different from each other. |
