PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator whose hoist and counterweight do not interfere with each other. SOLUTION: The elevator comprises a car 4, the hoist 1 located on the side of the car 4, and the counterweight 3 connected to the hoist 1 with a rope 30. A side deflector sheave 6 located on the side of the car 4 and a back deflector sheave 7 located on the side of the car 4 are mounted between the hoist 1 and the counterweight 3. Even when the counterweight 3 is located at the top of a rail 11 for counterweight, the counterweight 3 with necessary weight can be loaded without the hoist 1 and the counterweight 3 interfering with each other.
