PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a protective film composition which excels in heat resistance, adhesion, and visible light transmittance and, at the same time, can form a protective film having high surface smoothness even when the surface of a base material is not planarized, and has high resistance to liquid crystal staining and excels in high temperature water-vapor resistance on its ITO deposition particularly when used as the protective film for the colored resin film of a liquid crystal display color filter. SOLUTION: This protective film composition comprises, as the essential components, (1) an epoxy resin having at least two functional groups in the molecule, (2) an addition reaction product of a polycarboxylic acid having at least two carboxyl groups in the molecule with a vinyl (thio) ether compound as the curing agent, and (3) a curing catalyst.
