The invention relates to a method for controlling an automatic transmission by means of an electronic transmission control, comprising the following steps: by displacing the driving switch to forward driving direction (V), the transmission switches to the actual drive-away gear in forward driving direction; by displacing the driving switch to reverse driving direction (R), the transmission switches to a speed-adapted reverse gear; the selected driving direction is changed through a lateral movement of the driving switch (-, +), causing downshifting or upshifting by one gear; the actual gear is maintained until the driver manually switches gear again; a load recognition system ensures that undesirable upshiftings during overrun conditions are suppressed.
