Java run-time system with modified linking identifiers

A Java run-time system comprises a stacked-based interpreter for executing a Java program (10) being comprised of Java bytecode instructions (20) and Java class structures (30), a converter (100) for mapping standard Java symbolic linking strings (80) contained in a downloaded Java program (10) onto linking identifiers (65), and an export table (40) for storing linking identifiers (65) generated by the converter (100) to bind a reference in a bytecode instruction (20) to be executed to a corresponding link target (90). Said Java run-time system is in particular suitable for embedded microcontrollers on smart cards. <IMAGE>
