摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple, inexpensive and miniaturized polarization mode dispersion compensation module capable of removing or reducing the polarization mode dispersion of an optical transmission line. SOLUTION: The module is provided with an optical waveguide chip 3 forming on a substrate 1 an optical waveguide forming area 2 having a core 4 and a clad 6, a bimetal plate 5 applying stress along the surface of the substrate 1 to the chip 3 and a Peltier module 12 controlling the temperature of the plate 5. The module 12 is functioned as a dispersion generation means generating polarization mode dispersion in light passing the core 4 in accordance with difference in a refractive index change between in a direction along the surface of the substrate 1 and a direction vertical thereto by controlling the warp quantity of the plate 5 by the above temperature control and controlling stress to be impressed to the chip 3 thereby applying refractive index changes mutually different in the direction along the substrate face and in the direction vertical thereto to the core 4. Thus, the polarization mode dispersion of the optical transmission line can be compensated by the generated polarization mode dispersion.
