PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain cast iron containing fine graphite and having high damping capacity without using a die nor adding Ti. SOLUTION: The cast iron having high vibration damping capacity has a composition containing, by weight, 2.8 to 3.8% C, 1.0 to 2.7% Si, 0.3 to 2.0% Mn, <=2% Cu, <=0.2% Sn, <=0.1% Sb and 0.004 to 0.020% rare earth elements, and the balance substantially Fe. Alternatively, the cast iron having high vibration damping capacity has a composition containing 1.5 to 2.75% C, 2.5 to 5.5% Si which satisfy C%>=-Si%/2+4, 0.5% Mn and 0.004 to 0.020% rare earth elements, and the balance substantially Fe.
