PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wide phase contrast film which has such view angle characteristics as to make the film usable in a reflective liquid crystal display such as a portable information device, prevents ghost phenomenon and is cost- wise advantageous because many phase contrast films can be cut off. SOLUTION: The phase contrast film comprises a thermoplastic resin film and has <=45 μm average thickness in the width direction and >=700 mm width, the difference between the maximum and minimum values of retardation in the width direction is <=10 nm and the deviation of the delay phase axis from the direction of the stretching axis <=±0.7 deg..
