PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing an optically active cyanohydrin using a high-activity (R)-hydroxynitrile lyase extract. SOLUTION: This method for an optically active cyanohydrin of formula (II) (X, Y and Z are each independently the same or different and H, F, Cl, Br, I, OH, an O (1-4C alkyl), OCOCH3, NHCOCH3, NO2 or a 1-4C alkyl) comprises reacting an aldehyde of formula (I) with HCN in a water-immiscible organic solvent in the presence of water, in the absence or presence of a buffer and in the presence of the (R)-hydroxynitrile lyase.
