PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a catalyst for purification of exhaust gas which is prepared by depositing one or more kinds of active metals on a carrier made of alumina added with niobium pentachloride and which mainly uses hydrocarbons as a reducing agent. SOLUTION: The activity in the initial stage and after use of the catalyst is increased by the addition of niobium pentachloride.
