A system and method for facilitating communication over a distributed electronic network (e.g., the Internet) is provided. A dynamic data system may comprise a distributed network, a plurality of data services and an executive service connected to the network, and a plurality of users intermittently connected to the network. A user having a unique identifier may be assigned a remote data service used to store dynamic information including a connection address for an electronic device associated with the user. A connection address for an electronic device associated with a user may be retrieved by other users from the distributed data system to provide presence detection or point-to-point communication capability. A consistent mapping scheme for remote data services allows a particular service assigned to a user to be found rapidly with a unique identifier. In certain embodiments, a relatively centralized static data repository including unique identifiers may be maintained separately from a dynamic data portion of the system. In other embodiments, static data may not be centralized in a repository. Reliability of a distributed data system is furthered by providing at least one backup data services, automatically detecting faults in an operating service or device, and automatically bringing a backup service online as a replacement. |
