PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bacterium having the ability to clean groundwater or soil or the like contaminated with phenols or trichloroethylene. SOLUTION: This new bacterium belongs to the group ofβ-proteobacteria and is capable of assimilating phenols under aerobic conditions and of degrading trichloroethylene. A method for specifically proliferating the bacterium is also provided.
