PURPOSE: A method for extracting sodium substituted tryptophan from ginger is provided, which sodium substituted tryptophan is useful for the treatment of hepatitis B. CONSTITUTION: A method for extracting sodium substituted tryptophan from ginger comprises the steps of: extracting ginger with a water-soluble solvent by heating ginger in 60 to 90 deg. C water for 1 to 3 hours; and subjecting the extract of ginger to reverse phase high pressure liquid chromatography and anion exchange chromatography to collect a fraction corresponding to sodium substituted tryptophan, wherein the water-soluble solvent is water; the reverse phase high pressure liquid chromatography uses C18 column, and 0.05% trifluoroacetic acid containing water and 0.05% trifluoroacetic acid containing 80% acetonitrile as eluting solvents; and the anion exchange chromatography uses DEAE column and 20 to 50 mM tris(pH 7.0 to 7.5) as a buffer solution.
