PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing in high yield 2-methoxy-4- nitrobenzaldehye free from any problem associated with waste liquid treatment or the like. SOLUTION: This method for producing 2-methoxy-4-nitrobenzaldehyde comprises the steps of hydrolyzing a 2-methoxy-4-nitrobenzyl halide with an inorganic base followed by oxidation in the presence of nitroxy radical, and then hydrolyzing the product preferably with an inorganic base; wherein the reactions are made in a water-hydrophilic organic solvent mixed solvent at room temperature to 80 deg.C; alternatively, this method comprises the steps of reacting the 2-methoxy-4-nitrobenzyl halide with a 1-6C organic acid metal salt followed by hydrolysis with an inorganic salt, and then oxidizing the product in the presence of nitroxy radical. |
