PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for optimizing the spectral response characteristic of a color image input device as a color scanner which enables to equate the values of X, Y and Z to two color stimuli that can be considered as the same color under a specific light source, by correcting the CIEXYZ color matching functions and linear-transforming the corrected color matching functions. SOLUTION: In the existing methods of image processing by using the values of X, Y and Z in the CIEXYZ color specification system and the values of L*, a*, b* in the CIELAB color space, it is impossible to equate the values of X, Y and Z of two color stimuli having different spectral reflection factors from each other in a specific color specification evaluation that can be considered as the same color under a specific light source. Therefor, it is necessary to adjust the two color stimuli, considered as different, after acquiring the input image signals. In this method for optimizing the spectral response characteristic of a color image input device, the CIEXYZ color matching functions are corrected and the corrected color matching functions are linear-transformed to equate the values of X, Y and Z of two color stimuli that can be considered as the same color under a specific light source.
