PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize adverse effects on the electric resistance of a liquid developer for electrophotography or electrostatic recording and on the electrostatic charge characteristics of toner particles and to provide a liquid developer having improved dispersibility of a pigment and improved dispersion stability of toner particles. SOLUTION: In the liquid developer containing at least an insulating organic solvent, a colorant, a thermoplastic resin and a dispersant and containing an electric charge controlling agent if necessary, a modified novolak resin (A) having an aromatic ring and the structure of an epoxy group ring-opened by a carboxyl group derived from a hydroxycarboxylic aid and/or a graft copolymer (B) are (is) contained as the dispersant.
