PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a metal halide lamp with long life in which a front glass of the device is not adversely affected in case the lamp is broken. SOLUTION: The metal halide lamp comprises a pair of electrodes in its inside, and a luminous part 1 in which, metal halide containing at least one kind of rare earth metal halide and halogen element in excess of stoichrometrical equivalent of above metal halide, are enclosed. When defined that M (mg/cc) is the volume of mercury, 9.9>=M>=7.7 is fulfilled, and 25-100 atom% of excessive halogen against the halogen contained in the metal halide is enclosed, here, the tube voltage is 200 V, class and the tube output power is 2000 W class - 3000 W class.
