PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transmission type liquid crystal display device which prevents the degradation in contrast by multiple reflection, eliminates the intra-surface nonuniformity of brightness and eliminates the dependence of observation on angles. SOLUTION: This transmission liquid crystal display device has a liquid crystal display element 10, a light transmission plate 11 which transmits the white light from a light source 14, a volume hologram 12 which is disposed on the surface on the liquid crystal display element 10 side and a microlens array 13 which is arranged in parallel between the volume hologram 12 and the liquid crystal display element 10. The volume hologram 12 consists of uniform and parallel planar interference fringes 12a which diffract the light having the specific wavelength and specific incident angle transmitted in the light transmission plate 11 at a specific angle. An antireflection film 21 is arranged on the front surface on the microlens array 13 side of the liquid crystal display element 10 and a scattering layer 22 is arranged on the opposite side. The average diffraction efficiency on the light source side of the volume hologram 12 is lower than the average diffraction efficiency on the opposition side of the volume hologram 12. |
