PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hologram recording and reproducing device and a method for recording and reproducing such a hologram that the user can freely rewrite information. SOLUTION: The hologram recording and reproducing device is equipped with a supporting means which holds a recording medium made of a photorefractive material as the medium is freely attached, a means of recording referential light which allows the coherent recording referential light beam at a first wavelength to enter the principal plane of the recording medium in the recording direction, a means of signal light including a lens which allows the coherent signal light beam at the first wavelength modulated according to the image data to enter the recording medium and then to cross with the recording referential light beam in the medium to produce a refractive index grating of a three-dimensional interference pattern by the signal light beam and the recording referential light beam, a means of reproducing referential light which allows the coherent reproducing referential light beam at the first wavelength propagating in the opposite direction to the recording direction of the recording referential light beam to enter the recording medium to produce phase conjugate waves from the refractive index grating of the interference pattern, and a light accepting means including a lens which guides the phase conjugate waves to a photodetector. The device has a means of forming an image plane to make the image forming planes by the lenses of the signal light means and the light accepting means to be coincident with each other.
