PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To apply desirable tension to a timing chain. SOLUTION: A tensioner comprises a shaft member 3 inserted in a case 2 for axial to-and-fro motion, an extruding spring 6 for applying driving force to the shaft member 3, a clutch 4 for engaging the shaft member 3 when the shaft member 3 is retreated to lock motion in the same direction and disengaging the shaft member 3 when the shaft member 3 is advanced, and a hydraulic means for applying oil pressure in the advance direction of the shaft member 3 to damp an input load on the shaft member 3.
