PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reproduce a short message for portable telephone by converting it into voice output. SOLUTION: The portable telephone set, equipped with a reception part 100, a key pad part 200, a buffer memory area 800, an editing part 300, and a voice output part 500, is equipped with a pronunciation dictionary 710 for Chinese, a word phrase dictionary 720, a character dictionary 730 having multiple readings, a syllable database 740, a control part 600, and a voice synthesis part 700 which refers to the mentioned dictionaries and database. The voice synthesis part 700 discriminates a text phrase and a sentence with multiple readings for a Chinese input sentence and performs phonetic processing, then converts a voice signal according to a basic syllable entity in the syllable database 740, and converts the short message into the voice output by sending the processed synthesized voice data back to the control part 600, which processes the short message by the voice synthesis part 700 and reproduces synthesized voice by the voice output part 500.
