The system provides monitoring of the operation of an electric motor and fan assembly, forming part of the cooling circuit within a motor vehicle. Operation is controlled by an electronic computer (10) operating in response to the condition of the cooling fluid circulating in the circuit and its temperature with respect to a threshold for automatic starting of the motor and fan assembly. The operation of the fan is for a limited duration, and the final temperature of the fluid is measured and compared with the initial stored temperature in order to deduce the operating state of the motor and fan.
