The steering assembly includes a steering column (2) having a steering shaft (10), a steering wheel (3), and a central cushion (4) having mounts (18) for allowing it to be fixed to the center of the steering wheel. There is a sensor (31) for sensing the morphology and position of the driver w.r.t the central fixed cushion with the view to control the functioning of the security device such as controlled inflation of an airbag (20) to reduce injury to the driver in case of accidents.
