Builder compositions are obtained by contacting (A) a crystalline layered Na silicate; (B) water; and (C) an acid H+>-yielding component, the molar ratio (A) : total available H+> from (C) being 4-1,000:1 and the molar ratio of water (B): total available H+> from (C) being 3-1,000:1. Builder compositions are obtained by contacting (A) a crystalline layered Na silicate of formula (I); (B) water; and (C) an acid H+>-yielding component, the molar ratio (A): total available H+> from (C) being 4-1,000:1 and the molar ratio of water (B): total available H+> from (C) being 3-1,000:1. NaMSixO2x+1*yH2O (I) M : Na or H; x : 1.9-4; y : 0-20.
