PURPOSE: A Plantago asiatica extract obtained from extraction of Plantago asiatica with various organic solvents or hot water is provided which is free from toxicity and side effects and can be applied to various foods, beverages or the like. CONSTITUTION: Plantago asiatica is heated with one organic solvent selected from methanol, hexane, chloroform and ethylacetate at 30 to 55deg.C and concentrated under reduced pressure. By MTT assay of SNU-16 as a human stomach cancer, the remaining organic solvent extracts except hot water extracts of Plantago asiatica exhibits a significant inhibitory effect on the growth of stomach cancer cells at a concentration of 100micron/ml and an inhibitory effect of 50% or more at 250micron/ml.
