A permanent magnet rotor cooling system and method in which a generally cylindrical rotor assembly is mounted for rotation about an axis of rotation in a housing of a motor/generator and including at least one air passage for flow of cooling air drawn by the rotational motion of the rotor to pump cooling air within said housing, said air passage communicating between at least one air intake orifice located on said rotor assembly and at least one air exhaust orifice located on said rotor assembly, said air exhaust orifice located at a distance from said axis of rotation greater than the distance between said air intake orifice and said axis of rotation.
