<p>A seal wear ring (12, 14), that forms part of a bearing assembly (B) in which a journal (2) rotates, includes an steel sleeve (50) having a cylindrical sealing surface (54) that is presented outwardly, a cylindrical positioning surface (62) that is presented inwardly, and a rib (64) that projects radially inwardly past the positioning surface. In addition, the wear ring has a polymer insert (52, 90) that is compressed between the surface of the journal and the cylindrical positioning surface of the sleeve. The insert stabilizes the sleeve so that its sealing surface remains concentric with the journal. As a consequence, the elastomeric seal element (46) of a seal (30) which surrounds the wear ring establishes a highly effective fluid barrier with the sealing surface of the sleeve and has enhanced longevity.</p> |
