A laminate for a packaging material, characterized in that it has a paper layer, at least a polycyclic olefin copolymer-containing layer on the outside of the paper layer, at least a barrier layer on the inside of the paper layer, and a polyethylene layer on the inside of the barrier layer. A container for a liquid food or the like using the above packaging material comprising a paper layer, a barrier on the inside of the paper layer and a polyethylene layer on the inside of the barrier layer exhibits a fine outward appearance.
