<p>An apparatus for guiding a high speed liquid jet (97) used in forming ophthalmic incisions includes an instrument body (21) having an elongated rectangular portion (22) and a tapered end portion (23). A cylindrical housing (24) is secured to the tapered end (23), and is provided with a stepped opening (26) extending axially therethrough. A jet carrier (41) includes a longitudinally extending body (42), and a pair of high precision crossed roller slides (30) join the carrier (41) and the body (21) to permit lateral translation of the jet carrier (41). A micro-motor assembly (31) secured within the rectangular body portion is joined to a pinion gear (33) which engages a rack gear (52) joined to the jet carrier (41) to drive the jet carrier (41) in lateral translation. The jet carrier (41) includes a proximal connector for a high pressure fluid hose, and a jet nozzle assembly (46) extending from the distal end. A plurality of guide members (61) are provided. Each guide member (61) includes a generally cylindrical body and a central portion comprised of a reticle (74) and applanation plate (71).</p> |
