The automobile body side wall structure has a unit to absorb impact energy, in the hollow profile of the door sill between the inner and outer shells. A crash element (23), which collapses axially, lies horizontally across the longitudinal axis of the door sill (12) within a longitudinal section of it. The crash element has one end side (28) at the inner shell (17), to extend freely towards the facing wall of the outer shell (18) with a gap between them. The unit has a pot shape, with nominal bending points (29).
