Sliding ring seal comprises a sliding ring (5) fixed to the shaft (1) of a compressor via an O-ring (6) and rotated with the shaft; and a counter ring (4) fixed gas-tight to a housing (2) of the compressor via an O-ring (3). The sliding ring and the counter ring are pressed and slid against each other by a spring (8). One of the rings is made from a carbon-silicon carbide composite material and the other from a silicon carbide material. Preferred Features: The carbon-silicon carbide composite material has a structure obtained by a partial conversion of the surface layer of the carbon substrate into a silicon carbide material.
