PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas barrier film hard to damage though lightweight and rich in gas barrier properties, a display element and a method for manufacturing them. SOLUTION: The gas barrier film is constituted by providing an SiO2- containing layer which contains 60% or more of SiO2 and 10-40% of carbon, on at least the single surface of a base material. The SiO2-containing layer is obtained by forcibly reacting a main agent comprising organopolysiloxane having a methyl group or a phenyl group, a crosslinking agent comprising organosiloxane having a functional side chain, a curing catalyst comprising an organic compound containing a metal selected from Zn, Al, Ti and Sn and B3+ halogen by energy treatment. The display element has the gas barrier film.
