PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a vinylalcoholic polymer composition having excellent gas barrier property especially under high humidity condition, and to provide a coating material and a laminate. SOLUTION: This method of producing a vinylalcoholic polymer composition (II) comprises the steps of establishing a reaction system of a solution containing a vinylcarboxylate polymer added by a metal alkoxide (I) and/or an oligomer derived from a metal alkoxide (I), where saponification reaction of the vinylcarboxylate polymer and a reaction in which at least a part of functional group contained in the metal alkoxide (I) and/or the oligomer derived from the metal alkoxide (I) takes part are simultaneously proceeded to produce a vinylalcoholic polymer composition (I), addition of a metal alkoxide (II) and/or an oligomer derived from the metal alkoxide (II) to the solution of the vinylalcoholic polymer composition (I), and removing solvent from the solution to obtain the composition (II).
