PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of controlling the position of an optical pickup, capable of setting an accurate operational central position, even if the influence of such as a disturbance exists. SOLUTION: The method of controlling position for determining the relative position between an optical disk and the optical pickup, where an optimum jitter value of detected signals obtained through detection of reflected light from an optical spot is given, includes jitter value obtaining steps S5 and S6 in which a plurality of times of transferring operations are performed within an adjusting range for the relative position and in which a jitter value in each transferring position is obtained, an edge position setting step S10 for setting, as an edge position, a relative position where the jitter value becomes grater then a preset predetermined jitter threshold value on the basis of the obtained transferring position and the jitter value, and an optimum position calculating step S11 for calculating an optimum position where an optimum jitter value is obtained on the basis of the set edge position. The edge position setting procedure S10 sets the edge position, insofar as at least two of the relative positions giving jitter values more than the jitter threshold value exist.
