The base for supporting the posts of a chain or retracting belt barrier, or a sign, comprises a box (2) which is filled with ballast and a lid (20) with an aperture (32) in its upper surface. The post is inserted through this into a vertical tube (10) in the box, the lid being held on this by a collar (32a) running round the aperture.
