PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a self-excited, non-isolated chopper converter of a simple circuit configuration. SOLUTION: A compound choke coil 1 comprises a choke coil 11 and an auxiliary winding 12 coupled to the choke coil 11. A first drive circuit 41 biases the control electrode of a switching element 2 in the conducting direction with a voltage induced in the auxiliary winding 12, during the 'on' period of the switching element 12. Also, the circuit 41 turns on a normally closed switch Q1 to break the switching element 2, when a capacitor C1 in a first time constant circuit 411 has been charged to a given value. A second drive circuit 42 turns on a normally open switch Q2 to make the switching element 2, when a capacitor C2 in a second time constant circuit 422 has been discharged to a given value.
