PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that enhances the layout of a reference board to an image read area so as to attain suitability of original image information read from an original image on the basis of the read result of the reference board. SOLUTION: The image reader 1, that uses a read means that reads an image of an original placed in an image read area S through the scanning in the main scanning direction and the subscanning direction to obtain an original image information, is characterized in that the image reader 1 has a reference board 7 in the main scanning direction at the outside of the image read area S at the side of a home position HP of the read means and a reference board 8 in the main scanning direction at the outside of the image read area S at the side opposite to the home position HP of the read means.
