The biodegradable casing (1) is made by immersing a metal mesh mould of all or part of the casing in a suspension of biodegradable natural fibres in water, a ketene binding agent and an optional dye. Water is then sucked through the mould, causing the fibres to adhere to its outer surface, and once the required thickness has been achieved the mould is removed from the bath and the fibre layer is removed and stove-dried to form a hard casing. The casing is made e.g. in two halves (3, 4) with flanges (3a, 4a) joined together by adhesive. The fibre casing can also contain a marker product and/or pyrotechnic powder.
