The present invention relates to the use of CD36 ("CD36") receptor as a heat shock protein receptor, cells that express CD36 bound to an HSP, and antibodies and other molecules that bind CD36-HSP complex. The invention als o relates to screening assays to identify compounds that interact with CD36, a nd modulate the interaction of CD36 with its ligand, such as HSPs, and methods for using compositions comprising CD36-receptor sequences for the diagnosis and treatment of immune disorders, proliferative disorders, and infectious diseases.
