PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to realize high coercive force Hc and reduce noise in a magnetic recoding medium having a granular magnetic layer and to reduce the degradation of medium characteristics in initial growth area in the granular magnetic layer. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is formed by laminating at least a non-magnetic undercoat layer, a magnetic layer, a protective layer and a liquid lubricating layer in this order on a non-magnetic substrate. In addition, the magnetic layer comprises ferromagnetic crystal grains and non-magnetic grain boundarys consisting of the oxide or carbide of a metal which surround the crystal grains. A non-magnetic intermediate layer comprising the non- magnetic crystal grains and the non-magnetic grain boundarys consisting of the oxide or carbide of the metal which surround it is provided between the non-magnetic undercoat layer and the magnetic layer. |
