PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure electric discharge lamp capable of stopping generation of a pulse voltage when an light emission tube fails to start or when rare gas for start-up is made to flow into an outer tube owing to deterioration or the like of airtightness at a sealing part of the light emission tube. SOLUTION: A starter 2 consists of a series circuit of a glow starter 2a and a heating resistor 2b in parallel with the light emission tube 1, and is connected with a series circuit of a first thermosensitive switch 3 and a current fuse element 4. A discharge gap 5 is also connected in parallel with this starter 2 or to a series circuit of the starter 2 and the first thermosensitive switch 3. When the glow starter 2a is heated by the heating resistor 2b, the glow starter 2a is made up to close the circuit.
