PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a facsimile machine, capable of transmitting a binary (monochromatic) images, regardless of the color of a character in a color origi nal. SOLUTION: When the original is set and the name and address of a receiver is inputted and a start key is depressed, reading of the original is started (S200 to 204). When monochromatic reading and character reading are set and selected by a user by setting of an operation panel (S206: N, S210: N), the threshold of each brightness component is not set, but the respective components of colors RGB are binarized in accordance with a threshold set in advance, as shown in the binarization of each color component in Figure 3 (b) (S214). After preparing image data binarized by each color component, when OR processing (S216: N is not operated), color components, including maximum black pixels among image data of each color component, is selected and this is subjected to compression processing, as a binary image to be transmitted to the address of the receiver (S220 to 224).
